"Did you ever meet a boy who had six legs? A boy who needed all six to walk? If you haven’t, then you haven’t met me! My name is Jay. I was born with two legs, just like any normal baby. But what my parents did not know when I was born was that my legs didn’t work quite right. This meant I would have a lifelong disability. Is that why I now have six legs? Sort of…"
Excited to see what else comes after?
There I was, a young 7 year-old me standing in my, then, New York home. I was there with my two legs from birth, and the four I later inherited (my walker) to help me get around. I couldn’t run, jump, skip and dance like other children my age. Back then, I never knew what that was like–nor do I to this day.
Even so, I refused to let that keep me from the boundless possibilities that I set in my mind. There, I was free! 🚀 Free to fly faster than any hawk, run ranges further than any ostrich, and petal more powerfully than any Olympic cyclist! Despite being as free as a bee in my mind, I faced many challenges, both at home, and beyond. I constantly had reminders thwarted at me that I’m not as free as everyone else, and that I never could be. As if my cerebral palsy was a weighted shackle that would impair me from ever achieving anything I set my mind to.
It was through these adversities, and others, such as often falling over, being pitied, being stared at, and not even being picked last–𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑙𝑙, that a flame was stoked in me to use the burning hot coals that life had placed in my lap as fuel. From a young age, it's been my mission to see to it that every child who has known adversity, whether unique or common, w̲o̲u̲l̲d̲ ̲n̲e̲v̲e̲r̲ 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞–knowing they harness the superpower to overcome anything life throws at them.
Thus, I wrote my flagship book, at the age of 14, “The Boy with Six Legs”: based on my life story, it’s a tale of perseverance, triumph, and courage for children and adults alike, You and your children will be touched, moved and inspired to make the most of the one life that you each get to live.
I’m a big believer that 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, and that the challenges hidden within it hold treasures yet to be unlocked within you. You have an earth-shaking greatness nestled deeply within, that the world is waiting to be enkindled by. 🕯️
You just have to let it out. And I’m here to help you with that.
Cerebral palsy is a condition some people are born with or get early in life, which makes it harder for them to 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬. This happens because a part of their brain that helps control how muscles work didn't develop the way it usually does.
People with cerebral palsy might move in ways that are a bit different, or they might need help with walking or picking up things, but like everyone else, they have their own talents and abilities!
The United Cerebral Palsy of Georgia’s official endorsement of the profound impact of The Boy with Six Legs book.
I've had the privilege of knowing Jay Wheels and seeing him persevere through many hurdles. His books, 'The Boy With Six Legs' and its sequel, are incredible narratives of inspiration, encouraging to those with challenges; a blessing for anyone who feels life is harder due to their circumstances.
The Boy with Six Legs' has been a great source of inspiration for me, showing how challenging circumstances can be a gift to help others. Serving as a beacon of resilience and courage, Jay Wheels reminds us to appreciate what we have and has inspired me to share its profound message with the young.
Although my book looks pretty nice on my shelf, its purpose is only fulfilled if it's in your hands!
𝐼 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛’𝑡 write this book to become some famous author, make a ton of money, and then disappear into the sunset. 🌅 I wrote this book because as a child, teenager and even young adult, I didn’t have access to a story like this. A story rich in hardship, courage and triumph from a kid like me, who knew what it was like to live with adversity every day of his life. That’s not to say I didn't have great days and fun times–I certainly have! It's just that I can only imagine how such a book could have empowered me through many hard times in my life journey growing up.
It's because of this that my mission is to 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 in having access to an awe-inspiring story that may serve to encourage them through every stage of their life now, as well as their life in their later years.
